De documentaire Sharkwater (2006) wordt onder duikers en zeeliefhebbers als een klassieker beschouwd. Haaien worden vaak beschouwd als gevaarlijke roofdieren die een bedreiging vormen voor de mens. In werkelijkheid is het andersom: ten tijde van het filmen van de docu Sharkwater was 90% van de haaienpopulatie wereldwijd in de drie decennia daarvoor uit het water gevist. Haaienvinnen hebben namelijk een enorme waarde in delen van Azië, waar men gelooft dat de vinnen een geneeskrachtige werking hebben. De haaienvangst is in de meeste landen illegaal, maar in de praktijk wordt er nauwelijks iets gedaan tegen de illegale bevissing van de haai. Dit terwijl haaien een ongelofelijk belangrijke rol spelen in het eco-systeem van de oceanen.
11 jaar later is deze film nog steeds zeer relevant, er zijn weinig significante stappen gedaan door overheden wereldwijd om de illegale haaienvangst tegen te gaan. Het lang verwachte vervolg op deze film komt hopelijk binnenkort uit. Filmmaker Rob Stewart overleed onderwater op 37-jarige leeftijd tijdens het schieten van beelden voor de sequel Sharkwater: Extinction. Wij presenteren deze documentaire in Metabolic Lab samen met Felix Petersma en Linda Planthof, beide fervente duikers, zeeleven-activisten en haaienliefhebbers, die achteraf de discussie zullen leiden.
