About the Climate Choir
Starting in January, Climate Choir Amsterdam organises monthly rehearsals. We practice protest songs that we sing during climate actions and other events. Music offers us comfort. It is a creative outlet for frustrations. It is a way to create something beautiful as a group, driven by our desire to make the world a better and more beautiful place. Led by conductor Blue Dog (Matthias Konecny), you will learn protest songs used to inspire people to do better for Mother Earth. We are part of a national network of choirs (klimaatkoren.nl).
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to read sheet music to join?
No. Our choir has no entry requirements. Anyone who loves singing and Mother Earth is welcome. Sheet music is provided, but we also work with audio files so you can practice songs by ear. We do sing polyphonic (multi-part) repertoire, so if you don’t have much experience, you are expected to practice the pieces and try to improve. It’s like playing football: our club sets no prerequisites, but we do occasionally play a match, so it helps if the team wants to score.
If I join, do I have to block the A12 highway?
No. As an action choir, we participate in all kinds of protests, demonstrations, and other events. From singing during the Climate Wake (klimaatwake-amsterdam.nl) to Extinction Rebellion actions where risk of arrest is possible. It is ALWAYS your own choice what you do or do not participate in. For every action, we communicate clearly in advance whether you might face any risks. That being said: if activism isn’t your thing at all, a different choir might be a better fit. If you’re unsure, you are very welcome to come drop by, get a feel for the atmosphere, and see if the Climate Choir is right for you!
Can I join if I don’t live in Amsterdam?
Yes, but do check klimaatkoren.nl to see if there is a climate choir in your area. Currently, there are already over ten climate choirs nationwide, and more are joining all the time.
